Dubai is the property phenomenon of the 21st century. Its scale, the daring of its planners and the utter luxury of its built fabric is downright staggering.
The city sheikdom's residential market was opened to international buyers two years ago. Already more than 100 000 units are being built or planned. They don't have the legislation properly in place for freehold title but a secondary market is already emerging at the 5 000 unit Palm Jumeirah. It's the first of three colossal island developments being reclaimed from the Arabian Gulf, and will have golf
Burj Khalifa: A tower that already makes history
Dubai: An awestruck audience watched as the tallest tower in the world lit up with fireworks at the launch ceremony of the Burj Khalifa.
Thousands of attendees held their hands to their mouths as the fireworks crackling above lit up Dubai's sky, and gasped every time a dramatic stunt was performed.
Many could be seen holding the backs of their necks after looking straight up continuously for half an hour.
Approximately 6,000 invitees to the ceremony watched the launch event below the tower and on massive screens erected specifically for them.
Families and individuals, young and old gathered at the Burj Khalifa Island park, sitting on beanbags and enjoying a meal before the ceremonies started. While some arrived in suits and dresses other were seen lazing in shorts.
The latest addition to Dubai's skyline served as a backdrop for souvenir pictures for the sea of people who were watching from the park and from Dubai Mall.
The event started with the arrival of Shaikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, accompanied by Shaikh Abdullah bin Zayed, Foreign Minister, and other Cabinet members and dignitaries.

Seawings, a local seaplane charter company, has just added four new routes to its repertoire.I was among the first few to experience its new excursion called the Royal Fly and Dine. This involves arriving by seaplane at Abu Dhabi’s jewel in the crown hotel,Emirates Palace, for lunch. Billed as a ‘lifestyle product’, you can expect more than just a short flight along the coastline. I arrived at the Jebel Ali Golf Resort and Spa and after checking in, was escorted by golf buggy to the hotel’s beach-hut-cumdeparture- lounge.
Overlooking the hotel’s plush marina, I sipped on an orange juice, and listened to peacocks chirrup in the background. It’s easy to feel like an A-lister as you nibble on canapés and enjoy a head and shoulder massage while taking in the spectacular sea views. This is the ultimate in luxury, and sharing the plane with just a handful of others adds to the feeling of exclusivity.
As my plane pulled up in the marina, the hotel’s guests looked on enviously. I tried to maintain an air of cool,as though I board seaplanes like most people catch taxis, but it was all lost when I squealed in delight as the pilot helped me inside. The plane is small, but comfortable, and every seat has a window view, so there’s no scrabble to get the best chair.
Atlantis Hotel, Dubai
Like everything else done to excess in Dubai, a hotel themed around the ancient myth of the lost ruins of Atlantis complete with flown-in dolphins from the South Pacific, a massive water park, and a top floor that houses a £13,000-a-night suite complete with gold-leaf 18-seat dining table is set to open today.
The sprawling 113-acre Atlantis Palm Hotel with 1,373 rooms and 166 suites is hoping to defy the credit crisis and play a part in sustaining Dubai’s tourist industry after regional oil profits have run dry.
Modeled on a sister site in the Bahamas, the £800million resort on the Palm Island is ocean-themed family entertainment with an enormous open-air tank with 65,000 fish, stingrays and other sea creatures. The resort uses a staggering 15 million gallons of water.
A featured dolphinarium with over 20 bottlenose dolphins flown in from the Solomon Islands was developed despite controversy from environmental groups and some residents of the islands that protested the decision to sell the dolphins, and the 30-hour plane flight to transport them to Dubai.

species of fish including sharks, eels, rays and piranhas. Photo EPA
But developers seem undaunted by criticism from environmental activists, who claim the construction of artificial islands damages coral reefs and even shifts water currents, pointing at growing water and power consumption.
The resort shares the island with rows of high-end houses and construction sites, but other international names are set to move in, including Donald Trump for the storied QE2 ocean liner which will become a hotel in the center of the palm and a tourist attraction docked alongside the island tree’s ‘trunk.’
According to the Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu firm, the Middle East had the highest hotel occupancy rates in the world during the first half of the year, with Dubai leading the area at 85.3%.
Dubai had the highest room rates in the region, but Deloitte noted that revenue growth is slowing.

Some Facts about this Hotel :
The Burj al-Arab (Arabic: برج العرب, “Tower of the Arabs”) is a luxury hotel in Dubai, the second largest city of the United Arab Emirates, and was briefly marketed as “the world’s first seven-star hotel”. It was designed by Tom Wright of WS Atkins PLC. At 321 metres (1,053 ft), it is the tallest building used exclusively as a hotel. It stands on an artificial island 280 metres (919 ft) out from Jumeirah beach, and is connected to the mainland by a private curving bridge. It is an iconic structure, designed to symbolize Dubai’s urban transformation and to mimic the shape of an Arab dhow
The marketing technique of self-declaring the 7 star title has worked very well. Burj al-Arab became one of the most wanted destinations, and not only in the United Arab Emirates. To keep objectivity, the hotel is officially 5 star deluxe. The service and the unseen luxury definitely makes it stand out of the other 5 star hotels. The service includes private chauffeur with Rolls Royce or BMW 7, private reception desk every floor, helicopter pad (helicopter trips to the center of Dubai or to the Dubai International Airport), restaurant located 200m above the sea level, with amezing view on the city. The hotel offers free entry to the Wild-Wadi Water Park as well
Burj al-Arab has the most luxurious interior imaginable. Khuan Chew, Design Principal of KCA International was responsible for the interior design. The most expensive materials were used throughout the building. There is no exact data about the cost of the hotel, but rumours say that the return of investment could be 100 years, although the nights at Burj al-Arab start at $1000. The Royal Suite costs $28000 per night.
There are 202 duplex suites in the hotel, the smallest suite starts at 169 m², and the largest is 780 m². Each suite has floor to the ceiling windows with spectacular views on the Persian Gulf. Every suite has sumptuous living and dining area, and office facilities. They are equipped with 42 inch Plasma screen TV, and everything is automated and can be controlled via remote. The list goes on, like 13 pillows to choose from and similar thoughtful care for the guests.
There is huge variety of brilliant, elegant restaurants that offer much more than the average. Al Mahara (The Oyster) let you enjoy your meal next to a large circle aquarium. The Skyview Bar leaves you with an unforgettable experience drinking coctails -made by Rikard Lindqvist (mixologist) from Sweden- 200 m above the sea-level. If that is not enough, there are 8 more restaurants to choose from.
Trick to get in for free: There is an entry fee to the hotel if you just want to see it from the inside, which is about ~50 euros. Although there is a trick that might help you get in without payment. Make a reservation on the phone for any restaurant in Burj al-Arab, you will get a reservation number which you have to show at the front gate. When you get inside to the hotel, just avoid the restaurant. Make sure you dont give your real phone number to them.
The Tower of the Arabs from an exact angle (sailing into the city of Dubai) can be viewed as a Christian symbol, the cross. It is still widely disputed, wether the British architects made it intentionally, or this is only a harmless coincidence. As United Arab Emirates is an Islamic country, such symbol would not make the locals happy, as Burj al-Arab is the iconic tower of their country, that represents their dream of the modern Dubai.
Burj al-Arab was the first hotel to self-declare the 7-star title, but soon another hotel appeared in the United Arab Emirates, the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi. While Burj al-Arab lies on a small artificial island, Emirates Palace is surrounded by a spectacular garden with multiple swimming pools and amezing fountains. The hotel kept the traditional arabic architectural style.
The tower that resembles the sail of dhow, became the world’s tallest hotel with the height of 321m in 1999, and the iconic tower of Dubai. The construction took 6 years (1994-1999).
